Whales Of Sydney is the portfolio of wildlife photographer Jonas Liebschner, author of the book Whales Of Sydney. All images on this website and in the book are a result of countless hours spent on a whale watching boat somewhere off the coast of Sydney, Australia.
Jonas Liebschner was born 1985 in Germany. After finishing school he started an internship at a German advertising agency for which he worked for the next 2.5 years as a graphic designer. He decided to quit his job and left for New Zealand in 2007. By coincidence he was offered a job as a tour guide with Whale Watch Kaikoura which saw him taking tourists out to see the whales.
Photography has always been a passion of Jonas, so while he was not paid to take pictures of whales in Kaikoura he started taking his camera out and took pictures of what he saw on a daily basis. As his visa was about to come to an end and he had no plans to return to Germany just yet he applied for jobs with whale watching companies in Australia and was offered a job with several companies but decided to start working for Whale Watching Sydney as a photographer.
Jonas is still working for Whale Watching Sydney ten years later and has since become an Australian citizen spending most of his time out at sea trying to capture that one special moment.
Jonas’ photos have been featured in Newspapers around the world and one even found its way onto the cover of the album Sense by the popular Japanese pop band Mr. Children which always gets a great reaction when he mentions this to Japanese tourists on board.
If you happen to be in Sydney between mid May and the end of November jump on board one of the daily cruises they offer and see for yourself what an awesome experience whale watching can be.
